Windows 2000 Server Backup - 4 Files are skipped

Ashok_Avadhani

Backup Exec v9.1 installed on Windows 2000 Server. Do NOT have Advanced open file option. Full local backup generates 4 files are skipped warning. The 4 files are listed below.

Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\CPL.CFG - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\wins\j50.log - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\wins\wins.mdb - skipped.
Unable to open the item C:\WINNT\system32\wins\winstmp.mdb - skipped.

CPL.CFG is used by the license service to keep purchase history. The remaining 3 files are associated with WINS. License service and WINS are running fine.

How do I Backup these files without the Advanced Open File option?

Thank you.

Hi

I also had this files being skipped

I just exclude the DHCP and Wins folders.

I assume the files inside these folders are superfluous as the data in DHCP and WINS is for ever changing and if I rebuilt the server I wouldn't need the files within.

Somebody might tell me otherwise or you may be able to do the same

Cheers

HI,

It is recommended that you do not select the DHCP and WINS databases for backup. These databases have a different method of backup and hence should not be included with normal backup jobs.

These files are exclusively locked by the Windows OS therefore cannot be backed up by Backup Exec. The "live" Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) database files are locked by the WINS service and unavailable for backup.

Please refer the following technotes to back up WINS and DHCP databases:

Technote: How to back up the Microsoft "DHCP.MDB" file
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/190995.htm

Update us on the same and revert for any further Query
Hope this will help you

Thank you
Gauri

Hi !

I can exclude WINS directory from backup. What about Cpl.cfg file? I believe that this file is used by Microsoft License Service to save the purchase history. I would want to backup this information.

Thank you.

Hello,

The CPL.CFG file is a file that is used by the License Logging Service.
You may exclude this life from the backup or ignore the error messages. If
you need to back this file up, you can stop the "License Logging Service"
as part of a pre-job command and then start it after backup with a post-job
command.
To use Pre-Post commands to stop this service please create two batch file.
*** STOP.BAT (Specified in the Pre command options)
Contents of this file :
Net Stop "License Logging Service"
*** START.BAT (Specified in the Post command options)
Contents of this file :
Net Start "License Logging Service"
Hope this helps. Feel free to revert for more information.
