a00084af error when backing up Exchange 5.5 Information Store

When backing up our Exchange 5.5 Information Store using the Veritas Agent we get an error a00084af the directory or file was not found or could not be accessed.

The backup then shows a communication failure error and stops.

We're running Exchange 5.5 (post SP4 hotfix) on a Windows 2000 SP4 server. The IS is 140GB in size.

Can anyone assist?

Hi,

This error error is reported also when any Mailboxes or folders selected for
backup were deleted or a mailbox store is renamed/moved after selecting for
the backup.
Refer this technote: http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/207001.htm

This doesn't appear to be the case in this situation. It's Exchange 5.5 so I only have a single Information store to backup which cannot be renamed. It hasn't been moved since installation.

The IS is large and initially does start being written to tape. It gets around 20GB in then fails with an error stating it cannot communicate with the information store.

Hi,

What is the exact error in job log?

Try a backup with NT backup.

Also disable Antivirus for test purpose and back up the IS.

Am I right in assuming the backups have never worked? If so, install Outlook 2000 on the Exchange server and connect it to the admiistrator mailbox, make sure the administrator mailbox has the 'Hide From Address Book' box unchecked. This mailbox needs to stay unchecked otherwise the server has no way of accessing the information store.

Check through the event logs at around the time the backups start, look for anything unusual, especially for logs that say the information store/directory is stopping/stopped.

Hope that helps.
