backup exec needs a new tape after 42 from a 72gb tape

hi all

i've a backup exec v. 9.1 on a windows server 2003 with a hp dat72 tape drive.
the jop backup 42gb then he needs new tape. the tape is a 35/70gb cartridge.
what's the solution of this problem?

Take a look at your logs if you are using software compression- see what the compression ratio is, they will not be 2:1. I have had this problem in the past and from what I understand it comes down to "what are you compressing?" As you know not all files compress equally. If all the files you were backing up were text files (compress nicely) then you would get closer to that 2:1 ratio but since no one has all text files this ratio varies greatly. If you are backing up, lets say, a server, you will never get 2:1 compression.
Possible solutions-
*Look into hardware compression (although I don't think it works any different)
*Reduce your backup job
*Incremental or differential backups
*Use two tapes
*Consider increasing your backup drive and media's backup capacity by switching to a new format.
