Hello, all,

my server:
Windows SBS 2003 SP1
Backup Exec 10.1 Rev. 5629 with Small Business Server Edition serial number installed.

In the job properties settings>Advanced Open File:
"Use Advanced Open File Option" is checked
The radio button "Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service" is selected, the other ones are greyed out.
Snapshot provider is greyed out and "Automatic - Allow VSS to select the snapshot provider" is selected.

My backup job keeps failing:

In the job log, I get in red:
"
AOFO: Initialization failure on: "HDNG1\BKUPEXEC". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
VSS Snapshot error. The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot failed. Make sure that all provider services and tasks are running. Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

I get the red errors with these, also, besides the already-mentioned "HDNG1\BKUPEXEC":

AOFO: Initialization failure on: "HDNG1". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

AOFO: Initialization failure on: "HDNG1\SBSMONITORING".

AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Microsoft Information Store". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider error (0xE00084AF): The directory or file was not found, or could not be accessed.

AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

I had a similar problem (although I could be way out here). It could be that like me you were using the AOFO while having one or all of these selected; Exchange Mailboxes, SQL Services, or Microsoft Info store. These cannot be backed up using the AOFO option. The best thing to do is either run the backup without AOFO selected at night (when files on the server aren't being accessed) or split the backup into two jobs:

1) AOFO Selected: All your drives & shadow copy components
2) NO AOFO: Exchange mailboxes, SQL services, and microsoft information store,

Hope this helpsMessage was edited by:

Hi Radu!

You are trying to backup Information Store using AOFO.

But the Advanced Open File Option is not intended to be used for backup of databases.

Please deactivate the option, run the backup job again and verify the results.

Following link will guide you to know more about AOFO.

http://support.veritas.com/docs/263784

Do revert back.

Thanks & regards,

Edd,

Thanks for the helpful reply.

I did run the Exchange/SQL job with no AOFO. Full backup job completed successfully.

Running the drives + shadow components with AOFO on: job failed:

Backup- C: The item C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\MSFax\ActivityLog\InboxLOG.txt in use - skipped.

Are these 'exceptions' because of AOFO not working properly? The 'error' under Shadow Copy Components is AOFO-related for sure, right?

I was looking at the services and Volume Shadow Copy is stopped, even though it's set to start automatically.

To remind you, in the job properties settings>Advanced Open File:
"Use Advanced Open File Option" is checked
The radio button "Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service" is selected, the other ones are greyed out.
Snapshot provider is greyed out and "Automatic - Allow VSS to select the snapshot provider" is selected.

What to do next?

Thanks for all your help,
Radu

Hello,

- Do you have AOFO Licensed?

- Kindly deactivate the option and try the backup.

Thanks for the help.

I finally got around to completing the IDR wizard.

It told me to get a full and overwrite backup job.

So under selections I opened the server, and checked "Local Selections," to where all the drives, Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes/Public Folders, all SQL, Shadow Copy Components, Microsoft Information Store, and Utility Partition were all selected.

I was under the impression that since it's checkable, the AOFO is enabled. After research, I see SBE 10d for Windows Small Business Servers doesn't include the AOFO, but it's available for purchase. So, no, I don't have AOFO licensed.

Now on to the job properties:

Settings>General:
Full - Back up files - Using archive bit (reset archive bit
Verify after backup completes (checked)

Settings>Advanced:
only middle checkbox was checked (... junction points)
Open file when AOFO is not used: With a lock

Settings>Advanced Open File:
Use Advanced Open File Option (not checked)

Settings>Advanced Disk-based Backup:
greyed out, not checkable

Settings>Microsoft SQL:
Backup method: Full - Back up entire database or filegroup
Consistency Check before backup: Full check, including indexes
Continue with backup... (not checked)
Consistency check after backup: Full check, including indexes
Enable SQL 2000 advanced... : greyed out, not checkable

Settings>Microsoft Exchange:
Exchange server backup method: Full - Database & Logs (flush committed logs)
Mailbox backup method: Full - Backup messages - Reset archive bit
none of the 3 checkboxes below the backup metthods were checked

Settings>Microsoft SharePoint:
greyed out, uncheckable

Settings>Lotus Domino:

My questions:

1. what do I need to do get a successful job? It's been so long since I've seen

that.

2. I disabled AOFO. Why am I getting AOFO errors?

3. Did the System State get backed up? With v10 it's under "Shadow Copy Components" and that's where I got an error.

4. If my server crashes, will this back-up be usable to bring the server back up to the running state with the bootable tape and IDR, "eliminating the need to first reload the entire operating system of crashed servers"? Are there any other options I need to purchase to fully take advantage of IDR in case of a disaster?

5. Not sure if this is important, but I thought I'd add it: the "Volume Shadow Copy" service is set to automatic startup type, but is currently stopped. The "Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider" service is set to "Manual" and is stopped.

Thank you all,
Radu Radu

It's been a week and I haven't gotten any help. I tried to refrain from posting, but as I said above, it's been a long time since I've seen a "Successful" job.

Thanks

I am having the same error on a servers only job which does not backup any exchange or databases, only disks and Shadow Copy components.

The backup job fails with the error: AOFO: Initialization failure on "D:". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Coy Service (VSS).

The event viewer shows: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on the Shadow Copy Provider {f5dbcc43-b847-494e-8083-f030501da611}. Routine details BeginPrepareSnapshot({f5dbcc43-b847-494e-8083-f030501da611},\\?\Volume{74f0e0ce-aba9-11d9-9099-505054503030}\) .

The VSS Service is started when the backup starts, but it is stopped when the backup finishes. This error has been occurring for a week. I kept checking this forum thread for a solution. I also would like to have a successful completion on my job.

Dear Radu,

My problem was solved by removing Acronis True Image Server software. We had installed a free 15 day demo of Acronis on the server, and that caused my VSS problems. You can search the forums for BeginPrepareSnapshot and find the thread for my problem/solution if you like.
