"data base end of media" despite available tapes in cascaded drive pool

we have backupexec 9.1 rev 4691 installed on windows server 2003 sp1 with 3 external 35/70 CPQ DLT drives configured as a single cascaded drive pool.

when backing up data that spans multiple tapes, BE gives the following error upon backup completion:

"Final error: 0xa00084f2 - An attempt to write data base end of media has failed.
Final error category: Backup Media Errors"

it seems as if it has encountered the physical end of the first tape in the first drive and does not attempt to continue the backup on the blank tape in the second drive.

we do not get the error if the data does not span multiple tapes (all data fits within a single tape).

SCSI IDs are 2, 3, and 4. i have already applied the latest drivers per http://support.veritas.com/docs/273853

any other ideas on what i can do to get BE to move from one physical drive to the next in the cascaded drive pool?

thanks.

Hello Anchalee,

Generally this error occurs due to SCSI or hardware related issue. To resolve the issue, do the following:

1.) Update the SCSI Controller driver and firmware to the latest

2.) Check the SCSI cable and also ensure that it is terminated properly

3.) Clean the tape drive as per the instructions by Hardware manufacturer

4.) Try performing small backup using fresh media and verify the result.

5.) Please ensure that tape device is not set to SCSI ID "0" or "1". These SCSI ID's are usually reserved for the bootable devices

6.) To isolate the cause of issue, try performing the backup using WindowsNT backup and verify the result (stop all Backup Exec services prior to starting the WindowsNT backup)
