selection of system state greyed out after windows update

tony_odonnellt
Level 3
I have recently update a number of servers using windows update and now the select of "system state" for these machines is unavailable.
this happens to local machines running backup exec 9.1 as well as remote machines.
i can backup the system state remotely on a machine that did not have updates run on it.

does anyone have any ideas how i can fix this?

thanks,
Tony

Hello Tony ,

The first thing you can try is turning the Risctrict ananymous suport in Backup exec to 1. Use the following TN.
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/238618.htm .

Also check that all the admin share are enabled on the remote servers.

hope this helps

more info.
when attempting to select the 'system state' in a backup job the follow error pops up

"selection of this item is disabled.
you are not authorized to access this item.
a license key for backup exec remote agent for windows servers is not installed on the machine or the remote agent is old or incompatible."

the user running the backup is administrator in domain admins group. and the remote agent was running fine last week

Hello,

What is the operating system of your media server and that of your remote servers?
What were the windows updates that you installed after which the system state was grayed out?

Please follow the technote given below on your media server as well as all the remote servers.

(title)How to enable support for "Restrict Anonymous" when using Backup Exec 8.6, 9.x, and 10.0 for Windows Servers

Hello,

Please try to backup from the User Defined Selections and check the results.

Also, as a test you can try taking backup using Windows NT Backup utility.

Kindly update.

Regards

I am having the same problem, it is definitely due to that Windows 2000 security rollup. I thought BE 9.1 SP3 was supposed to take care of this issue but no go. Any resolution???

tony_odonnellt

ntbackup works fine and as a temporary measure i have a job scheduled to backup the system state to the hard disk which in turn is then backed up by veritas.

i have also tried selecting the system state by using the text selection option and this also fails as it is unable to connect.

I suppose I am stuck with that solution for now, any idea if this is fixed/non-issue with version 10.0???

Hello Tony,
Have you tried the user defined selections as mentioned above.
Also please install the latest MDAC update from the microsoft website:

How exactly would you backup a system state using the user-defined selections. What would be the syntax? Seems like that is only useful for backing up shares.

Hello,

Please refer the following technote to create User defined shares. System state will also be seen under user defined.

How to create a user-defined selection in Backup Exec 9.x and 10.0 for Windows Servers

OK, I did create a user defined share and the System State is still grayed out even in that and when I click on it I get the same error mentioned earlier in this thread.

'Selection of this item is disabled. You are not authorized to access this item, a license key for Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers is not installed on the machine, or the Remote Agent is old or incompatible.'

Hello,

This error can occur if Backup Exec is unable to determine the partition that is designated as the "boot drive".

how can we tell is which is the boot drive?

tejashree_Bhate
Level 6
Hello,

Please follow the steps given below.

1 Stop Backup Exec Services
2. Open a Registry editor (Start > Run > Regedt32).
3. Navigate to \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\Backup Exec\Engine\NTFS.
4. Select Edit > Add Value.
Enter ForceBootDrive (this is case sensitive) as the value name. Select REG_SZ as the data type. Click OK.
When the string editor appears, enter the current boot drive. For example, enter C: (the letter C and a colon) if your system boots off the C drive. Do not use a value such as C (just the letter C) or C:\ (the letter C, a colon and a backslash). Click OK. Close the registry editor.
5. Start the Backup Exec services .

Thanks

Thanks, this fixed the problem.
I had read somewhere else that backup exec may have problems finding the boot drive but of course they didn't explain how to tell it which drive was the boot.

thanks very much.
