sending job notices thru the DMZ

I'm running a SAN and one server is sitting in my DMZ. I have the media server with the ssso installed on it and its backing up to disk just fine. the problem is getting notices of backups. I enter my ip of the exchange server under tools > email and pager notification >smtp but the notices will not go thru. if i change the ip to my outside address it changes the ip on the rest of the san media servers and nothing goes thru the regular route.
any thoughts?

this is good information however, it doesnt really answer my problem. i guess i should rephrase my issue. With the san and all the media servers installed if i change the SMTP IP address on one media server, it changes it on all of them. Is there a way to change the ip on one and leave the others alone? That way i can forward the message outside.
thanks john

I think it's done by default, for less administrative effort with the Email notification setup thing. Why not try an good old Outlook rule concerning this specific server name?
