hello,
i am new to symantec backup. the previous backup admin had bought symantec backup exec 2010 and have been backing the data for a year to tape. however the last three backups failed. and the forum suggested contacting the hardware vendor. But the hardware vendor is saying it has to do with the backup software. so now i want to backup data to a local drive in the server where backup exec is installed. i have three other server runnning remote agent, two rhel 5 and one win 2008. when i try to create a new backup job using wizard i dont seem to get those servers. so can anyone help in this

This is most probably Credentials issue. Refer to the following technotes which gives SOLUTION for this issue.
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH136148 : How to define/grant the required user rights/permissions for a Backup Exec Service Account ( BESA )
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH136078 : Local Selections are missing from the Backup Job Properties Window
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH129293 : Local and remote resources are not displayed for backup selection
Thanks,

Is remote agent service running in the client computers?
Check if the remote agent installed on client is publishing to media server or not.
Have you tried selecting them from Favourite Resources in the selection list?

Check the Agent Browser service on the media server is running ok. Also check windows firewall hasnt suddently self imposed itself and causing issues.
One other thing to check is are you able to telnet on port 10000 to these servers? this wil prove if the client is listening.

helo kiran
the remote agent service is running in the client computer.
how do i check whether it is publishing. attached find a picture of the remote agent in the remote server.

Second sereen shot confirms that it is publishing. Make sure the media server name listed under Publishing tab is correct one. As you have done push-installation of remote agent, no chance of it being wrong. But just to be on safer side. Try to create a backup job without using wizard, under selections add the remote server under favourite resources according to the TN mentioned in my earlier reply.

dear be-nugget
the agent browser is running in the server backup exec server is installed.
the windows firewall is also turned off
i cant telnet from the server backup exec is installed as telnet has not been installed due to some reasons. but when i tried to telnet from a normal use pc to the server with remote agent what i get is attached to this post
thanks

i have read the article. but i am unable to follow as i could not find the favourites resource node.
i would be glad if you could explain it more.
and does the media server mean the server to which i am backing up the files. if so it is a folder on the same server the backup exec is installed.
thnks

Not even media server is listed there !!
If IPV6 is enabled, disable it.
If not helped, try restarting BE services including SQL and see if that helps. Lastly restart the server and see.

That proves the agent is working ok, install teh telnet feature on your media server and do the test from there, Also try using the debug tool in backup exec it may give you a reason when you expand resource selection about what maybe happening.

hello sush
your reply was of great help. now i am able to see all the servers in the custom selection. however i can only browse the files in backup exec server in which it is installed (win server 2008) and one more server (win server 2008).
the linux servers (rhel 5) are visible but when i try to expand to select files to backup it gives the error attached below. i have two linux (rhel 5) servers in which oracle database (11g) is running which i am trying to backup. i have remote agent for oracle and linux installed on them. Even the service is running.
i also have a user group named beoper and root is a member of it.
so any ideas.
thanks

From the screenshot it seems that you are using the "backupexec" account for accessing the Linux servers. Create a new account in Backup Exec and name is as "root". Then put the password for this root account as the password of the root account used to access Linux.
Use this "root" account and then you should be able to access the Linux servers.

Are you sure that the ROOT account has the right password?
Also try to restart the Linux agent service in the Linux servers and try to connect again.
Also ensure that Port 10000 is not used by any other application on the Linux server and if you have firewall then ensure that this port is open.
Thanks,
