Connecting to an EV2007 VS from EV9.0

Hi All,

Let me clarify.  Instead of going through the upgrade path with old servers i.e. EV2007->8.0->9.0, we have decided to just build out new servers on EV9.0.  We are using EV for journaling and DA.  Is there a way to perform DA searches from the EV9.0 DA environment against the EV2007 vault stores without upgrading that environment.  Can we move the archives?  Would it complicate things to have 2 sites from a DA search perspective?   Thanks!

Liz,

I believe JW misspoke, the EV version or API on the DA server has always needed to match the version of EV you are searching.  The DA version cannot be older than the EV version.

For example, DA 9 can search EV 8 or EV 9 but not both.

See this note from the Install guide:

If Discovery Accelerator is installed on a separate
computer from Enterprise Vault, you must install the
Enterprise Vault software on the Discovery Accelerator
computer. You require one of the following:
■ Enterprise Vault 8.0 (or later) Services
■ Enterprise Vault 8.0 (or later) API Runtime
Note the following important points about the version
of Enterprise Vault that you install on the Discovery
Accelerator server:

This version must match the version on all other
Enterprise Vault servers in all Enterprise Vault sites
that you want to configure in this Discovery
Accelerator installation. For example, for Discovery
Accelerator purposes, you cannot have one server
that runs Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP4 and another that
runs Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP3.
■ This version cannot be more recent than the version
of Discovery Accelerator. So, in instances where you
want to upgrade to the latest version of Enterprise
Vault, you must also upgrade to the matching
version of Discovery Accelerator.
■ You require Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP4 or later to use
the archive registration feature that is part of
Enterprise Vault's Move Archives functionality. This
feature registers with Enterprise Vault all the
archives that Discovery Accelerator is currently
using. (An archive is in use if its items are in a
Discovery Accelerator review set or appear in the
results of a search.) Registering the archives stops
Enterprise Vault from deleting them during an
operation to move the archives.

you can have multiple sites no problems, you can't move archives from EV2007 to EV9 through something like move archive due to its non existance in EV9.

You can export and reimport PST files or you could look at tools from someone like GlassHouse or Vault Solutions to see if they can help get items moved across.

If you wanted to use EV's move archive, you would really need to upgrade the environment.

Discovery Accelerator used to support searching EV8 and EV2007, but recently they've made it to be where the sites and servers must be in at the same versions.

I would be more interested to find out why you would want build an entire new site and make that much more work for yourselves as opposed to just upgrading

Has to do with a migration we're doing from another archiving solution to EV2007, also not wanting to upgrade all those servers we setup to accomodate this move, just want to start with a clean environment but have access to the EV2007 repositories.

Since you say DA will no longer support searching the EV2007 stores, I guess, we have no choice but to upgrade.

Would EV's move archive then only work across sites on the same version i.e. v9.

Thanks!

Move Archive first appearance is in V8.0SP4.

I strongly advise AGAINST using move archive to move journal archives (as they tend to be really big), and move archive is not the designated tool for that.

If you require access to the journal-archives, I suggest you upgrade the existing setup to V9 (going through going to v8 first, then 9),

However...

If you have expiry for the journal archive, I would build the new environment, and start using that one as the journal-archiving and DA solution. Keep the old environment running, with it's DA also. As soon as all items in the old environment  have expired, uninstall the old environment. This might require you to keep 2 environments running for a while, but will prevent headaches due to moving archives.

"Discovery Accelerator used to support searching EV8 and EV2007, but recently they've made it to be where the sites and servers must be in at the same versions".

Can you point me to any documentation of this or the version that supported it?  We want to explore installing the version that supported cross-version DA searching.

Thanks.

i didn't misspeak because we were running under a similar configuration and had all sorts of problems to the point where we had RPM's officially tell us that from now on EV and DA have to be the same version due to the extent of the issues we were seeing

From your post above it sounded like you said DA used to be able to search both an EV 2007 site and EV 8 site at the same time, so I must have misunderstood that.
