How to Create Exchange Mailbox Archive

dmc123

I have installed a new EVAULT 8.0 (SP3) on a Windows 2008 x64 server to archive an Exchange 2007 server.  During the initial setup we did not specify any Exchange Mailbox settings as we planned to use journaling only.  I am now looking into the mailbox archiving (specifically the pst import process).  When I attempt to enable a mailbox for archiving it is always greyed out and says "no archives were found in this site".    If I try to set the archive location for locaated PSTs I have the same issue of  "no arhives found in this site" and therefore I am unable to set the value.

If I go to the arhives area in the admin console, Exchange Mailbox folder, and right click I do not get the choice to create  a new archive (and none are listed).

In summary I am looking for information on how to configure and Archive location for either PST (location, collection, migration) and or Mailbox archiving.

FYI:The journaling portion we setup (including the archive) is all working with out issue.

Again you dont hit select archive, you just hit next and it will automatically create one as you cannot manually create exchange mailbox archives

Hiya,
First question is did you actually buy mailbox archiving?  If not, you will need to go back to your sales person and get it licensed.

So if you actually have purchased mailbox archiving you will want to have a read of the Setting up Exchange Archiving.pdf
It can be found here:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/336841.htm

Another thing, are you sure you have allotted the proper amount of storage for your Vault Stores?  Did you have a solutions design done?  If yes, did it include mailbox archiving and pst importing?  That is very important because you could soon find yourself out of disk space if it wasn't planned for.

Also, there are some great PST docs in the Article section of the forum:

i agree with tony, its most likely an issue with your licenses since you bought it for archiving only
however exchange mailbox archives can only be created when you enable an account, when you enable a user for the first time you do have an option to associate them with an existing archive, however it will be greyed out when no archives exist, instead you have to continue with the enablement process to which the archive is created after provisioning + enablement

however i think tony hit the nail on the head, when you start your admin service it will do a license check and tell you what you do and do not have, and if exchange mailbox archiving is not listed, you will have to buy licenses based on the amount of active mailboxes you wish to target.

also when you do pst migrations (whether its manually importing a pst through the wizard, client side or through the pst tasks) you also have to have PST licenses

It seems like thats a vaild option. I'll check with our license department to find out what exactly was purchased.  My initial thought was the option would be there since it exists for creating archives in the Domino Journall, Shred folders (and others) and I know we would not have purchased a Domino component.  Is there a way to determine this through the product?  Most software will show you that information, but I could not find it in the admin console.  It also seemed odd that I could create Mailbox Archive tasks, Povisioning Tasks, PST Locator/Collector/Migrator tasks, but just not an archive in the Exchange Mailbox folder if it was licensing as I figured it would prevent it all.

I aso read the above document (before this posting).  The problem is that the documents all talk "best case scenario" of just click next and go through the wizard.  Well.. the problem is the wizard gets to a step and its greyed out.  So I cant use the document, and hence the post.

We did have an initial sizing done based on our environement and adequate equipment is available.

Thanks for the assistance.

(Edit: License paper copy says Enterprise Vault E-Discovery Standard Edition for Microsoft Exchange 8.0 WIN Per User STD as weell as Vault Storage MGMT ADV Edition for Exchange).

show us a screenshot of where its greyed out,

What should happen is this

1. You add your domain and exchange servers in the VAC
2. You add your provisioning and archiving tasks
3. You set up a provisioning group for the users you want to enable for archiving
4. You hit the enable mailbox button and you will choose your exchange server to enable from
5. You will then have a choice to enable new mailboxes or disabled mailboxes.

At this point if you don't see any mailboxes either new or disabled, you've either not provisioned correctly, or you've chosen an exchange server with no users
so either choose a different exchange server OR run the provisioning task and review the report to see who got provisioned and who didn't OR set a new exchange server up as a target in the VAC then run the provisioning task and then try to re-enable the mailbox

its also quite likely you might not even have a provisioning task set up due to the fact that in a journaling only scenario you don't have one

Ok... Here is a screen shot (I blocked the users last name).  If I run the Enable Mailboxes for Archiving button and walk the wizard to this step you can see there is no Archive value.  I select the user and hit "Select Archive" button.
Enable A Mailbox.JPG

After the Select Archive button I see the following
Archive Screen.JPG

This is similar to what I see with PST.  Essentially it does not see an Archive that is valid for Exchange Mailbox/PST.  However I can tno right click in the Archives\Exchange Mailbox and create on.  I was however able to create one for journaling and this is setup and working.

Thanks.

Thank you.  I believe we have a solution.  Some where along the line I read that I needed to create it and kept just reading over the other instructions I guess.  Thanks for pointing it out.
