Index and shopping: what exactly they are?

Hi all

it seems a rethoric question :) but I've a customer experimenting...

He deleted all the index and shopping folder for a file system archiving and he discovered that he can retrieve but he cannot search....

Index are generated for Alta Vista search scopes...and shopping?

He asked me what and for what purposes are created the index and shopping folders.

Where I can tech documentations that explain their usage and, in which cases, EV system can avoid their presence?

I would refer your customer to the "Introduction and Planning" guide that is included with the Enterprise Vault installation media.  For Enterprise Vault 2007, the relevant information is on pages 126 and 127.
