NEW FEATURE: Item Type Customization

In my previous post I detailed the new Item Type Exploration capability. The complimentary capability to that is Item Type Customization – the ability to make changes to the extensions that make up the default Item Type Groups or the ability to create your own Item Type Groups.

Behind the default 22 Item Type Groups, there are over 8,000 extensions. Now some of those extensions are multi-purposed. We had one customer whose voicemail recording files were being classified as ‘game’ files within Information Map. An extension can only be in one Group. We made a determination as to where best to put these multi-purposed extensions, but sometimes they may not be the best fit for your environment. Item Type Customization allows you to move any of the existing extensions between any of the existing Groups, or in to new Groups which you can create yourselves.

Some customers have over 10 million individual extensions. Many of these will be few and insignificant (great candidates for clean-up) but there will be a small percentage that are very prevalent. These may belong to custom or home-developed applications and would be best suited to be part of their own custom Item Type Group.

Through Item Type Exploration you can now drill in the ‘Unknown’ group to see these. Item Type Customization allows you to create many new groups to move these in to. So, if you want an Application123 or ApplicationXYZ group available for analysis you now can do. Once the new group is created, it will be available to all Information Map users within 24 hours.

A nice benefit of this new capability is that you can customize what Groups (and hence extensions) make up the criteria behind the ‘Non-Business’ tile. By default, this is Audio, Video, Game and Temporary groups. You can now change this any which way you want.

Item Type Customization is accessed within the Information Map Administration Portal under Global Settings. You can learn more in this Feature Brief, or by viewing this short video from Evan Barrett:
