Database backup disk utilization

Hi,
 
We are trying to determine the impact of application speed when users feedback that their tasks take more time than norm to complete during the backup window. Some users work from home and run queries during the backup window. In addition the backup windows take 6 hours.
 
Just wondering whether backing up database takes up a lot of resources ? We have both SQL and Oracle databases.

How are you backing up the databases, RMAN, BCV's snap's, are you backing them up over the network, ie DB server to server that has a tape drive or direct to the tape drive this requires the SSO option, are you backing up the sytem after hours or during production hours?
