Exchange 2007 backups failing with status 58

MILB65
Level 4

so we are backing up via the passive node.  each cluster has 8 SG's.

when a SG is empty the backup attempts to connect via the active node.  we are seeing the following VSS errors:

The Microsoft Exchange Replication Service VSS writer (instance 93064468-9498-4138-86ff-057590e26e04) failed with error code 80070002 when preparing for a backup of storage group 'CATL0MS110-SG5'.

If the SG has at least one mailbox, it works.  I have looked on MS website if this is WAD but have found nothing useful.

Has anyone else run into this.

Is the status 58 coming from the NBU server or is it being displayed from the exchange server?

On the Netbackup side Status 58 is a connection issue to the client. Make sure that the master/media server has access to the client server. To check this, Open NBU Admin Console, Expand Netbackup Management > Expand Host Properties and select clients, then double click on the exchange server. When the Client properties window opens select servers and then add the master or media server to the list.

Status 58 usually indicates that the client is unreachable.

I've seen this when and IP address has multiple DNS names, and when a DNS name has multiple IP addresses.

A quick round of executing these commands several times will highlight if this is the cause:

On the master:

$ nslookup master-name

$ nslookup master-name

$ nslookup media-name

$ nslookup media-name

$ nslookup client-name

$ nslookup client-name

$ nslookup master-ip-addr

$ nslookup master-ip-addr

$ nslookup media-ip-addr

$ nslookup media-ip-addr

$ nslookup client-ip-addr

$ nslookup client-ip-addr

... execute all the same commands on the media server...

...and all again on the client.

Are all names and IP addresses consistent?  If not get DNS and/or reverse DNS corrected.
