GUYS ,,
Need you help in understanding how NDMP is sonfigured in my new environment..im confused :(
1. We have a new NAS filer backing up via NDMP storage unit having tape drives attached to some older filer which is not in use now..how ?
2. We have policies where any media servers (media manager type storage unit ) is backing up that NAS filer as well..how ?
Requestingly,in a simple manner can u tell me what ndmp is,types of it and (no bookish pls) in simple lay man language what r the things required to implement it in environment.
After reading i got more perplexed as according to it i shud have an Remote NDMP type setup in 2nd case .But when i do a tpautoconf -verify it says :
Is it sane ? i mean don't we require anything special (licence etc) to have remote ndmp ?
thanks in advance !!

Hi,
NDMP is a protocol used for transferring data from one device to another, reading the data from the device using (vendor dependent) mechanism but basically like 'dump/ufsdump'.
1 sounds like 3-Way NDMP
2 sounds like Remote NDMP
Direct (Local) NDMP = Tape Drives connected to Filer A via SAN/SCSI. Backup goes direct to tape.
3-Way NDMP = Tape Drives connected to Filer B. Backup goes from Filer A over the LAN to Filer B and on to tape
Remote NDMP = Tape Drives connected to a Media Server. Backup goes from Filer A over the LAN to the Media Server and on to tape (or disk, depending on NBU version)
The license requirement is an NDMP license and is per NAS head you are backing up via NDMP as far as I'm aware. I don't think it has a bearing on which method you use, it's needed to create policy types of NDMP.
Regards,
max.

information was brief but to the point..if u have something more to share on NDMP (how exactly it is connected to a SAN switch and then how to drives..i mean nitty gritty even ?) i would be really appreciating that as well..as i may need to configure some by myself going forward..

but now you're starting to ask more questions, maybe more bookish is what you need?
Veritas NetBackup (tm) 6.5 NDMP Administrator's Guide for UNIX, Linux, and Windows

Symantec NetBackup(tm) 7.0 for NDMP Administrator's Guide

And for something a little more generic:
