Drive types are by default assigned as per the external_types.txt in Device Mappings.
Windows: C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\var\global\external_types.txt.
Unix/Linux : /usr/openv/var/global/external_types.txt.

You will see that hcart is much more than LTO drives:

Can you imagine the MESS if Symantec had to provide a different drive type for EACH of these?

The drive type has nothing to do with the real type - it is just a way of separating different types.

See this TN for advice if you have more than 3 types of half inch drives: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH75821

It is simple ...

Forget hcart / hcart2 for a minute, think like this :

hcart = blue

hcart2 = green

hcart3 = red

hcart4 = yellow  etc ...

Simply, a blue tape can only go into a blue drive, yellow tape into a yellow drive and so on.

These are NOT naming conventions, they are 'densities' in NBU terms.

They control which tape can go in to which drive.

For example, if you have a LTO1 drive and a LTO5 drive, you would specify the LTO1 drive and the LTO1 tapes as say hcart and the LTO5 drives and tapes as say hcart2

Then only a hcart tape will go into a hcart drive.

These densities have no technical meaning - so I could call a LTO5 tape a '4mm' if I wanted to, as long as I call the LTO5 drives '4mm' as well, it will work fine.

Following on from Mariannes excellent pst, it would be easier if we just used colours ...

Any type of drive can be any density, it does not matter.

The only rule is :

A tape will ONLY be allowed to be loaded in to a drive with exactly the same Density.
