Hi!

1. Do i need dedicated HBA on client system for SAN Client technology to work ? Can i use the same HBAs for data/system and for SAN Client ?

2. Do i need dedicated HBA if i want that Client backup directly to tape library bypassing media servers ? Can i use the same HBAs for data/system and for SAN Client?

Do i need dedicated HBA on client system for SAN Client technology to work ? ---- YES

Can i use the same HBAs for data/system and for SAN Client ? --- NO

Do i need dedicated HBA if i want that Client backup directly to tape library bypassing media servers ? -- NO , Actually your SAN client will communicat to your FT media Server & FT media Server will write data to tape library

Find attached for more details.

Here is part of documentation:

About SAN Client tape storage destinations

SAN Client can use tape as a destination storage unit. Some tape drives are fast

enough to read and write the large volume of data that the NetBackup Fibre

Transport mechanism provides.

With tape as a destination you can use multistreaming, which divides automatic

backups for a client into multiple jobs. Because the jobs are in separate data

streams, they can occur concurrently. The data streams can be sent over one or

more FT pipes to the FT media server. The media server multiplexes them together

onto one or more tape media volumes. For example, if you have a database server

that provides multiple streams of data, you can multistream those database

backups to an FT media server. The FT media server multiplexes the data streams

onto the media, increasing overall performance.

You can replace NetBackup SAN Media servers with SAN clients and continue to

back up to tape. A SAN Client uses fewer system resources, both disk space and

processor, than a SAN Media server.

So could i install media server on client, and then make from it SAN Client and backup to tape ?

b'coz as per my understanding San Client will always communicate to FT media server.

so in other words if we are planning to implement SAN Client then we have to install dedicated FT media Server.
