Will LTO2 tapes work in LTO3 tape drives? If so do I need to change the media type from HCART2 to HCART3 for the LTO2 tapes, or do I keep them as HCART2's. We will be getting the LTO3's in a week.
NetBackup has a concept of "types" i.e. hcart, hcart2, hcart3, dlt, dlt2, dlt3
NetBackup will only place 'like' media types into the same drive type. i.e. - hcart defined media into a drive defined as hcart. - hcart3 defined media into a drive defined as hcart3.
The media and drive 'type' do not mean anything. It is just a way of separating media so drives of different types can co-exist in the same robot.
If the tape drive supports reading and writing to backwards compatible media, then you are best to configure the drive and media type the same in NetBackup.
If you had a configuration where (for example) the LTO2 drives were configured as hcart2, and the LTO3 drives were configured as hcart3, then NetBackup will NOT attempt to place hcart3 media into a drive as hcart2 or place hcart2 media into drives defined as hcart3.
