Could you please share all the steps that you have followed?
(As per EMC® Data Domain® Boost for OpenStorage Administration Guide)

Can you ping the DD Storage Server (using hostname) from master and/or media server? 

If there is a firewall between the media server and DD, have you checked port requirements?

EMC has a program called DDPconnchk that can be used to connect to the data domain and verify connectivity.

I have also seen where it can take a while for the active connection to be seen by netbackup.

Once you have the firewall issues covered...

Missing IP connectivity - check for misspelled server name in the NBU configuration - name must be FQDN e.g. srv1.acme.com not srv1. Verify with nslooup and ping.

Sounds like a firewall or DNS reverse lookup issue.
