I had this same issue. Once i rebooted the client server, the problem went away. If this doesn't work, try creating the backup job from scratch and rescshedule it.
Yes there is. You cannot install this version as a media server, but you can backup remote servers that are 2003. However, you are going to have issues with this type of setup. I would upgrade to 10 if possible.
Funny you should mention that. I am having the exact same issue on a Lotus Notes box. Have done all the same things with no help. I assume you are using the 3878 rev of BE?
