Appliance 3600

Hi,

Can any one help for the below queries.

How to reinstall backup exec in appliance 3600 with out data loss.

How to move the data from appliance deduped storage to external hdd.

thanks,

Bala

  • I'll be honest here Bala...involve Symantec as you should have support with the appliance. If it is something as catastrophic as this, then you're better-off getting them to get the data off the appliance and help you in resetting it.

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

1.. BEFORE doing a reinstall of Backup Exec on the appliance, you need to stop the BE services and get copies of the Data/Catalogs folders. If you don't stop the services, then the copy of data in those 2 folders will either fail with files being in use, or not copy everything making your recovery impossible. Once done, run the reinstall. You can refer to the TN below for further reference:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH62744

    2. You wouldn't move the data strictly speaking. You're going to create a stage which wil duplicate the data from the dedupe folder to that external drive. Refer to the TN below for the steps to do so:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH187265

Be aware that the data will be rehydrated during the duplication procedure.

    Thanks!

  • Dear Craig,

    Thanks for your suggestions,

Problem is media server is crached and not able to login to console. we are able to login only to appliance console. If we go with factory-reset  data will be lost. Before that we need to move the backedup data from sas disk to ext hdd.

If we can reinstall backup exec or move the data by logging into powershell with out dataloss it will be useful

    Thanks,

    Bala.

  • Reinstall BackupExec will earase all the data from disk. Best practice is that if you have tape out backup job and Backup Exec database then factory default backup appliance and restore database.

Catlog tape media to to restor backup.

  • Hi Craig,

We checked with Symantec support team, database is broken so they cannot do anything in this situation finally we ended up with factory reset losing backup.

    Thanks,

    Bala
