I cannot get 11d to backup to our auto loader, i get the error:

Backup- E: New Volume
Storage device "HP 2" reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Error reported:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
V-79-57344-34029 - A hardware error occurred.

I have tested the functionality of the Autoloader and the tape drive is functioning correctly with test backups from HP L&TT.

All of the drivers etc are fine.

Have i got to configure the scsi controller some how to get this working?

I have the same problem too.... :(

What SCSI adapter / server do you use? I have a HP ML 350 G5 and the HP U320 adapter with LSI 2000 Series chipset.... Maybe this issue is related to the SCSI controller; but I haven't found anyone that have tried to replace it....

the server is a DL380 G5 with a SC11xe conecting to a 1/8 G2 autoloader.

We are using a ML370G2 with a LSI controller conecting to a 1/8 G2 autoloader.
Currently in a "support" call with a symantec engineer, will update as soon as I am out of the call.

well im working. not that my autoloader working has anything to do with the 4 wasted hours i spent on the phone to symantec support!

If anyone is intersted here are my notes from the call in case you want to go through the same process. In the end my fix was to remove the two LTO 2 drives I had attached to a different scsi controller (these were being retired anyway) and move my new 1/8 G2 autoloader to the "old" scsi controller. After this i was able to backup and restore with no problems at all.

drivers set to correct versions as per symantec recomendations.
sent diag logs

removed all tape devices with tapeinst.exe
reinstalled mdac 2.8
downloaded driver pack from http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/289147.htm
was driver patch for wrong version (clever support engineer!!)
installed correct version(which was already installed if the support engineer had checked my hotfix installations or asked)
rebooted
ran tapeinst.exe
shutdown server
powered down device
started device
started server
At this point it was still failing and i shutdown the server, swapped the scsi controller it was using and everything worked fine form this point.

Good luck hope this will help some people!

Here is my working config in a HP ML 350 G5:
  • 1/8 Autoloader G2 with Firmware 1.50
  • HP 64 bit Single Channel SCSI G2 HBA with HP driver 1.21.8.0 (Storport)
  • Symantec driver for Tape (Version 5.1)
  • HP driver for Medium Changer (Version 1.6.0.0)
  • Storport update KB 932755 should NOT be installed!
