2 Media Sets on a single tape

Does anyone know if 2 sets can be put on the same tape? I want to put 2 opposite months on a tape, and when it is time to overwrite one, it will leave the other one alone.

For example.
January & July are on Tape 1 - let's say they both have data
When the next January rolls around, only the data for January is replaced. When July comes by, only July is replaced. We have an LTO-3 drive and tapes so we have plenty of space. I was just wondering because this would cut down on the number of tapes we would need to purchase.

Thanks in advance!

Nope - a tape can ony beliong to one media set at a time.

And you cannot do what you want with tape drives (or any sequential access data set) any way. You either add to the end of a tape (Append) or Start writuing from the beginning (Overwrite) which effevtivelu does a quick erase (re-writes the tape header) and any data on that tape is no longer available

Hello,

The following documents will come in handy:

An explanation of the "Overwrite Protection Period" and the "Append Period"

Thanks again Ken. We're going to go ahead and get 6 more tapes then. :)
