Does anyone know whether the agent browser service is required if no remote agents are in use? It appears unnecessary, but I would like to verify.

I guess you'll have to experiment. Pick a week day that you expect little user activy, stop the browser service, and let the job(s) run.

Or you could stop the service and do a couple of test backups, as long as you won't be relying the backups

Yep..Experimenting it is...Fortunately I have a test box to play with...I started yesterday and so far all appears ok....
have done a short (single folder) backup and restore without trouble.
All the other BE services do start at boot with the Agent Browser disabled, so that's also a good sign.
