An unhandled win32 exception occurs in pvlsvr - media server won't start

We are running Backup Exec 11d on windows 2003. Whenever, we try to start Backup Exec Device and Media Services. We get an in the event viewer error event id 4096 stating an unhandled win32 exception has occurred in pvlsvr.exe. The media server will not start.

pvlsvr.exe is the executable for the BE Device and Media Service which depends on being able to access BEDB (the BE database). Access to BEDB is dependent on the SQL Server. So there could be anything in that path of processes that could be causing a problem. So first make sure the SQL Server service being used for BEDB is running and there are no SQL errors in the app or system logs. If that is functional then look for the BEDB files of bedb_dat.mdf and bedb_log.ldf and make sure they are present and not read-only.

Next I would use Windows Component Checker to make sure MDAC is up to date and has no inconsistencies. Any MDAC issues can cause problems.

You may want to try using BEUtility to reload BEDB from Base, this means starting over completely with an empty database so this is a drastic step.
