B2D Slow Performance

SMS
Level 2

I just built a new media server based on BU Exec 2010.  The server is a Dell R510, H700 PERC and it has a RAID5 array (4x1TB SATA) for B2D backups.  I know that RAID5 isn't the fastest option, but file system performance is fine:

NBench write 500MB test files: 400 MB/sec  (yes, per second)
Robocopy write test: 2GB of data from C: drive: 3876MB / min

B2D is has terribly slow performance.  In initial tests of both network and local backups of the media server itself I'm consistenly getting about 500MB / minute on my B2D jobs.  I tried various sizes of B2D files, I've tried allocating the maximum size, I've tried overwriting existing media sets - the performance doesn't seem to improve.

I'm clearly not dealing with network, or disk sluggishness as direct file copies to the B2D volume are plenty fast.  Is B2D in Backup Exec just plain slow, or are there some undocumented tweaks???   Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Can you try sending multiple smaller jobs, simultaneously?  With 4 disks, you could do at least 3 concurrent streams to disk.

Also, what OS?

Lastly, BE2010, is all up to date with the latest patches?

Where are your B2D folders located and how are they connected to the media server?

Hi,

If you enable NTbackup, what sort of speeds are you getting then?

You can also take a look at the 2 articles below...might give you a bit more insight into your issue...
