BE 10d and SQL Server choices

I am about to install BE 10d SBS on Windows 2003 SBS. I need good answers to the following questions:

1) Is it better to use MSDE for Backup Exec, or to go full-blown SQL Server ?

2) What backs up the Backup Exec database ?

3) Will the choice I make for question number 1 impact my ability to run other applications that sit on top of SQL Server ?

My question has been answered from a budgetary point of view (we won't be spending the money for SQL Server, since we only have the Standard SBS edition (= no SQL Server), but I do want to know the best way to do this.

Also, since I will be using MSDE, I need it to install NOT to the C: drive, which is where the install window is threatening to put it. How do I change this ?

Hi Joshua!

Its also recommended that you install backup exec on the MSDE instance. Check out http://support.veritas.com/docs/273485.

Also check out http://support.veritas.com/docs/263147

Hope it helps!

Thank you. Now I have two good reasons to go with the MSDE that Veritas installs.

Here's the dumb question: if I pre-install MSDE from the Veritas media, do any of those ugly issues relating to existing MSDE installations apply to me, or does the Veritas Install understand that this instance was installed from its own media for its explicit use ?

Hi,

If you install MSDE using BE CD, the BEWS installation will automatically detect the running MSDE instance and install to it.
