BE 12.5 Job Failure

Nice_Person
Not applicable
Hi Everyone,

Windows Server 2008 Standard with SP2 (64 Bit)
Backup Exec 12.5 Quickstart installed SP & all the hotfixes

Have it setup to backup the entire server except the DHCP 'tmp.ebd' file. However, the shadow copy feature fails as it says it cannot find the 'asp_net.exe' file in 64 bit. Checking the directory it shows it doesn't exist. Unchecking the directory from the selection list but still the error shows as a backup exception when the job completes

Any suggestions?

Ignoring the exact file name for a minute - I can explain the problem

When software is installed on Windows 2008 it is possible for components of the software to register as part of the system state - sometimes the component of the software is only needed during the installation or is uninstalled at a later date - incorrecly leaving the registration to the system state behind.

When you run a backup job that includes a 2008 System State, Backup Exec queries the operating system registration for what to backup - hence files can be asked for that are no longer there.

As you can see from the description the cause is not really a Symantec problem (unless a Symantec product creates the registration to the System State anyway.)

We have seen this issue on Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 2008 - but the file name you have quoted appears to be a new one.

BTW Backup Exec exclusions ONLY apply to volume level file system backups they do not apply to System State backups.

Solutiions are
1) create small text file in the correct folder (if known) and make sure the file is called "asp_net.exe"
2) Try to find out the vendor of the original file and ask them if it should be present on your file system (accidental deletion might have occured) and if not how to remove the System State registration
