If you are using MSDE, by default, BackupExec creates a BEDB.BAK file every night.

As long as you have the most recent MSDB.BAK and the \Catalogs directory on a tape, you can install BackupExec, inventory the tape, catalog it, restore the BAK file and Catalogs dir, then see http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/260054.htm to recover your configuration and http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/272886.htm to force BackupExec to reindex the catalog so all you old tapes are avaiable for restore

On my machine the backup file is in
C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Data

Check your restore catalog to see if the \Catalogs directory is being backed up.

How can I check the catalog you are referring to?

The reason I am asking these questions is, in a situation whereby let's say my servers got destroyed in an event of a fire,

Would I be able to purchase a new Windows 2000 Server, put back on my Veritas and then restore my tapes just like that?

I've added the C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Data directory to be backed up also.Message was edited by:

Assuming that the hardware if pretty much the same, yes, you can just restore a backup. boot and away you go.

IF you don't have or can't find a copy of the Admin Guide, you can download one from http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/266190.htm

Read through the sections on Disaster Recovery.

Also see http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/260054.htm to see how to recover your BackupExec installation.

Hello Ashish,

As per the instructions given by Mr. Putnam, all you need to do is keep a copy of the Catalogs and data folders from Programfiles\Veritas\backup exec\Nt. You will thus be able to recover the old data is case of a disaster.

Additionally in case you need info on how backup exec backs up its own database which you might need to recover if need be, refer to the following technote:

How to run a dump database in Backup Exec 9.x and 10.x to dump the database file to hard disk
http://support.veritas.com/docs/268315

Revert in case you need any more information on this.
