Backup Agent on Exchange server dies

The Backup Agent on my Exchange server frequently dies during the backup. The Event Viewer just gives an event ID of 7034 and the text says it has "terminated unexpectedly". It used to never have a problem, but it suddenly started having issues about 2 weeks ago.

I applied all the latest hotfixes (I am running BEWS v9.1 with SP1) and redeployed the Agents. I had to go to the Exchange server and uninstall the existing agent before it would let me push out the new one. I finally got the new agent to install, but am still having the problem.

I am running Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise SP1 on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Or been able to fix it?

Both the backup server and exchange server already have the latest msjet components, as verified by the above component checker.

To isolate the problem kindly refer the following steps.

1)Try performing Backup by stopping Anti-virus services.

2) Please carry out test backup selecting few mailboxes to make investigate the issue, like does Backup Exec job engine service terminates on backup of few mailboxes or on all brick-level Exchange backup. Do revert back with the result of test backup.

Kindly refer the following technote to understand the cause of remote agent failure.

Title:- Performing an archive job with three or more partitions selected causes the VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) Remote Agent for Windows Servers service to terminate

It appears that Exchange Information Store service terminates unexpectedly during the backup. This usually happens when the Exchange database becomes
inconsistent. Hence, we suggest you to perform the backup of Exchange using the Windows native backup utility NTbackup. The NTbackup may fix up the
inconsistent database. After performing the backup using NTbackup, perform the backup using Backup Exec and observer the result.

Note: Stop all the Backup Exec services prior to performing backup with
NTbackup.

It seems that the issue is resolved. Please get back to us if you have any query.

I have excluded all Exchange file directories from anti-virus scanning.

I am running a backup of the Information Store with NTBackup now and will post the results after I try again with the Veritas.

One thing I have noticed - the service always dies while trying to backup the individual mailboxes.

The NTBackup of the Information Store finished with no problems.

Veritas is currently doing a backup of just the mailboxes and seems to be running ok this time - it's gotten farther that it usually does when it dies. Will have to see how it does for the next week or so - sometimes it'll run ok for two or three days then die again.

Keep us updated on this issue.

Also install HotFix 33 from the following link and verify the results.

It seemed to be going ok. No problems for 4 days, but then it died again on last night's backup.

I already have Hotfix 33 installed.

Hi,

Can you paste the job log for the failed job. Did the job fail while backing up mailboxes?
