Backup Exec 10.0 W/ Tape Library

I am using an HP MSL6030 tape library connected to my Windows 2003 Backup Exec 10 server. My problem is that I have to specify in the backup job what slots the media is in for the backup job. Veritas does not seem to pay any attention to the media set I have selected, unless I specify the correct slot + media set Veritas selects any media that it wants. Shouldn't a tape library be smart enough to scan the slots and locate the media that corresponds with the media set selected??????

Media sets are defined to protect medias from being used again by mistake.
To have your query resolved go to Tools>options> media management. Select Overwrite Recyclable media before scratch. If running a overwrite job make sure that the media which you want to use is overwritable , belongs to the media set which is defined for the job. If mulitple medias are there then it will pick the oldest one. If no overwrtiable media belong to the media set then it will look for scratch.

after the job is completed media acquires the overwrtie protcection period defined for that media set

Backup Exec appears to have a design flaw in the way it handles Media Sets which can result in lost data due to overwritten tapes.

See this link for a workaround:

Hello,

Refer to the following technotes for additonal information that will explain the way backup exec handles media, chooses them for backup jobs. The docs also talk about the way Overwrite and appnd periods work:

Revert in case you need further details on this or if the issue persists.
