Domain1 (FFL:2000, DFL:2003)
Exchange1 (2003)
BackupExec1 (Version 11d)
Domain2 (FFL:2003, DFL:2003)
Exchange2 (2003)
BackupExec2 (Version 10.0)
We have a block level backup of Exchange1 in Domain1 using BackupExec1.
We have catalogued the tape on BackupExec2 in Domain2 and want to restore a mailbox to Exchange2.
These are the changes we have made to the restore job
1. Source - Selections
Ticked the individual mailbox
2. Source - Resource Credentials
Changed the Logon Account for the Resource (Exchange1)
Tried System Logon Account & Domain Admin account for the domain it was backed up in
3. Destination - Microsoft Exchange Redirection
Redirect Exchange sets: Ticked
Restore to server: Exchange2
Server logon account: Tried System Logon Account & Domain Admin account for domain2
Restore to mailbox: Tried an account we created in Domain2 and also left blank when trying to let Backup Exec create it automatically
Mailbox logon account: Tried the account we are restoring too and a Domain Admin
4. Settings - Microsoft Exchange
Automatically recreate user accounts and mailboxes: Left unticked when trying to restore to a user account we created. Ticked it when we tried letting BackupExec create it
Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003: Ticked, but we receive this message when trying to run the job
"If you redirect the restore of a Microsoft Exchange 2000 storage group or database and you also select the "No loss restore" option, the database may not be able to mount after the restore. To prevent this, either clear the "No loss restore" option, or restore the storage group or database to its original location."
Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003: Unticked, the above message doesn't occur.
Everytime we run the job, after 3min, the job fails with the below message, either:
Final error: 0xe000032f - The restore failed because a connection could not be made to the Microsoft Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) to load the restore environment.
We were getting unable to attach to a resourse but managed to get past that by creating the storeage group and mailbox store in the same name. Also created the mailbox in exactly the same name as the backup.
Any help would be appreciated but the below questions spring to mind.
Does BackupExec need to be on the same version?
Do we have to restore it to the same domain or exchange it was backup in?
Because we are doing a block level restore, does it need to be in the same domain/exchange?
Does it need to be a database restore as a whole, so we are able mount it to another domain/exchange?
Are we missing anything in our restore job? For the restore to mailbox, we have tried username, domain\username, display name.
Does the user account we restore the mailbox too need to have the same user id?
I hope this all makes sense, there is a lot of information to take in!
Thank you!

Yes, Backup Exec version on Exchange needs to the same as the Backup Exec server.
Also, please review the following technote :

Hope this helps.
