Backup Exec 2010 with 'OFF-Line' Quantum Superloader 3 and QLogic HBA Fibre Card

Hi

My customer has Backup Exec 2010 on a Windows 2008 server.

There is a (new - recently replaced) QLogic QLE2460 Fibre Channel Card connecting the server to the Quantum Superloader 3.

The QConvergeConsole sees the Fibrechannel HBA successfully, and the drivers are all up to date.

The X-Talk software can see the Tape Library and run successful tests on the tape in the Tape Drive.

Windows Device Manager sees a Quantum Superloader Tapechanger and a Quantum Tape Drive.

BUTTTTT

Backup Exec insists the drive is OFFLINE. Please help - what do I have to do to get a Tape Backup out of BE2010???

Best Regards

Rod Rocket

Hi,

Find tapeinst.exe and run the setup. This will install the Symantec drivers for the device. Furthermore, in Device Manager in Windows, the robotics/medium change should show up as Unknown Medium Changer. If this isn't the case, then change the drivers within Windows.

Also make sure that the autoloader is working correctly. Stop the BE services and run the X-Talk diagnostics against the device to rule out hardware issues.

Thanks!

You need to ensure that the Tape Library and the Tape drive are supported by backup exec. Also, ensure that they are not used by any other application as BE needs exclusive access to the hardware. Is the firmware updated on the RL and Tape drives. Are you using Symantec Tape drivers for the tape drives, if not please do so.

The adamm.log file will give a lot of info about your environment and issues.  Something is probably wrong during the device discovery phase, but obviously BE can see that "something" is there, but it isn't happy about it.  Feel free to post it here and we will help you interpret it.

Have you tried right clicking on the device and clicking "online" to try and bring it back to an online state?
