Backup Exec on a Virtual Server

Hi!

Is it practical to have Backup Exec 2012 installed on a Windows 2008 R2 Virtual Server and connect the HP Storage to it to backup the data from the storage to a pass through H.D.D on this Windows Server?

Thanks.

Hi,

Symantec's recommendation is to always use a physical server for your backup server. Any issues you might experience would necessitate you duplicating this on physical hardware or you might not get support.
That said, it's an external drive, not a tape drive so that configuration should work.

Just be aware that it isn't recommended from a vendor-perspective.

Thanks!

How is the "pass through" configured

i.e. if just mounting via iSCSI should work.

You could also attach it as a datastore to the host and then configure a large volume inside the VM held on that datastore

However any form of FC, SCSI or USB Passthrough is not officially supported for either tape devices or disk storage.
