Backup Exec remote agent for Windows 9.1

Not applicable
I am pretty sure I know the answer to the question but I need an "official" answer to satisfy the customer. We just installed a new server and installed the remote agent for Windows v9.1. Their server is currently running v8.6 rev 3878 and they are getting the following error when backing up the new server.

Unable to initialize Remote Agent for Windows NT/2000 - performing standard backup
WARNING: Media servers cannot completely protect remote
Windows 2000 servers or workstations unless the Backup
Exec Remote Agent for Windows NT/2000 is installed
and running on each remote Windows 2000 server or
workstation to be protected. Data loss can occur if the
Remote Agent for Windows NT/2000 is not running
while backing up remote Windows 2000 computers.

I have verified that the agent is installed and running so I am sure it is the down level server. Again I am just looking for an "official" answer. If there is something I should check please let me know.

In view of the query put forward, it seems that Backup Exec software version is 8.6 and the remote agent which is pushed installed is of version 9.1. We would like to mention you the following.

If you read the software compatibility list ( the technote that you have already referred and link mentioned below, kindly check the following topic "Remote Agent for Windows Servers Compatibility"
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/261695.htm
It mentions "While the Backup Exec 9.1 Remote Agent for Windows Servers is recommended for use with Backup Exec 9.1 for Windows Servers, the Backup Exec 9.0 Remote Agent is also compatible. The Backup Exec 8.x Remote Agent for Windows NT is not compatible."
So while you upgrade from existing Backup Exec v8.6 to 9.1, kindly Update all agents/options on all remote systems because the remote agent software component which gets installed on the remote system is different for both the versions of Backup Exec V8.6 and v9.1.
Upgrading from 8.x to 9.1 includes upgradation of the remote agents as well. You can upgrade the Remote Agents on top of the existing version. Or you can perform a fresh install i.e. uninstall and re-install the Remote Agent for Windows Server. Refer to the following technote for the same:
Also, please refer the following technote as well.
With regards to backing up 9.1 server via 8.6 remote agent, we would suggest you please refer to the following technote:-
Title:- VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.x for Windows Servers is not compatible with Remote Agent for Windows Servers 8.6 or below.
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/263137.htm
----------------------------------------------------------------

So we suggest you either upgrade Backup Exec v8.6 to 9.1 or use 8.6 remote agent to backup remote computer.( Also we would like to mention you that Backup Exec v8.6 will not work with 2003 OS)

--------------------------------------------------------------
In order to backup remote(target) machine, RANT is to be installed on each of the target machine.
Please refer to the following technote to Silent install RANT on all the remote machine whom you wish to perform backup on.
Title:- How to perform a silent installation of the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows NT and 2000, previously known as the Agent Accelerator, from a Command Prompt.
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/230790.htm

Please verify that the Remote Agent is getting detected by the Backup Exec server:

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/238993.htm
Please refer to following technote for resolving the issue:

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/233217.htm

We hope this helps.
