Backup Rate Slow

Hi All,
Backup Rate of two Servers is very Slow, its areound 50-60 MB/Min. For rest of the servers its 450-500 MB/Min. This two Servers are behind the firewall. Also in different vLan.

I want to know is there any port needs to be open in the firewall, so that this backup rate become faster. For this access to this servers goes very slow, when I start the backup.

Also is there any settings needs to be done in the Backupexec, for the same.

Enviroment:
1) Server: Windows 2003 Std. Server2) Those 2 Servers: Mail Server (Lotus Domino 6) and File Server (Win 2003)3) Backupexec Version: Backupexec 10.0
Please Suggest.....

Regards,
Abhijit

check each end of each pipe between the media server and the two slow serves. Verify that Autonegotiate is NOT enabled on both ends of a pipe. Hardset at least one end, I prefer to hardset both end.

Hello,

Slow backup performance generally depends upon the hardware configuration
of a backup network.

The following factors contribute in performance of backup:

A. Tape Drive used for backup (Tape drive or Autoloaders) and the media.

B. Hardware or software compression used.

C. The device drivers, firmware for the backup device.

D. Whether performing local or remote network backup.

E. Antivirus option selected.

F. Job Scan Option selected during backup.

G. Virtual memory settings.

We recommend you to perform the following:

- verify the speed of the network link to remote server.

- you may perform a small test backup to this server when there is minimal network activity. Check the throughput rate of this test backup.

This helps in isolating network related issues.

- close all third party applications running on the server in question,
during backup.

Please ensure that the drive firmware is updated. You may refer to the
hardware manufacturer's Website.

Also ensure that the device drivers used are the latest version.

You may also like to refer to the following technotes addressing slow
backup issues:

Technote

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/231488.htm

Note that Veritas does not recommend use of network teaming with Backup Exec.

In order to isolate the issue, try following:

1. Backup throughput may reduce if the system resources are low. OFO requires a lot of free hard disk space, and if it is not sufficient then also this problem may occur.

2. Stop the Antivirus service and then observe the result.

3. Create a separate backup job for the suspected server and verify the throughput.
