Backup fails 0x48f - The device is not connected or 0xa00084e9 - No media

I am backing up two Windows 2000 SP4 DCs. The remote is Exchange 2000. I am getting error "0x48f - The device is not connected" after backup of the Exchange Mailboxes 38 GB into the job. I am not getting an soft read/write errors.
Previously I was getting error "0xa00084e9 - No media in storage device" 52-53 DB into the job after backing up Exchange and the local server. So, I cleaned the DLT1 Benchmark drive, reset the clean data. I also changed the order so that the local DC backed up first then Exchange.
The failure always seems to occur between backup sets.
Any ideas what our problem could be? I've loaded all the available fixes and cannot figure out what the issue is. The tape does not eject when the error occurs.

The problem ended up being the DLT1 tape backup drive. IBM replaced it under warranty and everything is working well again. Thanks.
