Backup to disk vs backup to the tape

Can anybody tell me which backup is faster? I thought backup to disk is supposed to be faster than to the tape and then I found out it was not. Do I miss some configuration or it is just the way it is?

Backups run on Backup to disk folders are always faster than Backups on tape.

I have done whatever the document says but still have the slower backup to disk than to tapes.

Antivirus service is running during the backup?
If so, then stop it during the backup.
