We are trying to restore an Exchange 2003 "Mailbox Store" to the Exchange Recovery Storage group.
- The backup was done using the same backup exec server & exchange 2003 server that we are restoring to.
- The backup was done using GRT to backup to disk.
- When we restore individual emails, it gets restored directly to the user's live inbox & the live mail box stores in exchange. We are trying to restore the entire Mail Box store & have it go to the recovery storage group, & not go to the live mail box stores. I can't find the option on this.
When you pick the entire Mail Box store, does it know to automatically go to the RSG? Seems risky & not well documented.
Backup Exec 2010 R2 Version 13.0 Rev 4164 : 32-bit : Win2K3 SP2
Thank you in advance.

Hello there,
Here is the detail technote about restoring Exchange 2003 Mailbox Store to Recovery Storage Group.
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH29719
AS it is Exchange 2003 backups make sure that the Exchange Information Store backups are not snapshot backups as snapshot backups restore to RSG will not work.
Thanks,

Thank you for the replies, but neither one answers my question.
I want to know how to make sure that when I pick the entire mailbox store (that was backed up using GRT), that the restore will go to the RSG on the mail server & not the live mail box/information store?
I am asking because when restoring an email from the the same mailbox store that was backed up using GRT, it does not give me an option; it just gets restored directly to the user's live mailbox. How do I make sure when I choose to restore the entire Mailbox Store, it is not going to the live mailbox store? I want to make sure it will be restored to the GRT.
Please see attached
Thank you in advance

Hello there,
Recovery Storage Group (RSG) is the feature of Exchange 2003 which can be used to mount another Mailbox store while your production is not hampered at all. When a RSG is created and the required Mailbox store is added to the RSG then the restore of that whole Store will always go to RSG as detailed in the technote " http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH29719 "
To know more about the RSG you can refer to the following articles from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824126
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124961(EXCHG.65).aspx
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange_Server_2003_Mailbox_Recovery.html
RSG is not for individual mailbox. So we can not restore a single mailbos to RSG so it has to be restore to the same mailbox. We can also restore the mailbox to a different mailbox using the Exchange Redirection option in the restore job properties.
