I've seen several posts where people are having a problem with imported tapes that should be recognized are seen as scratch tapes. Symantec tech support has posted that this is a design feature. ie, you must inventory imported tapes whether or not you have a bar code reader. Well , this is simply bull. There is a bug in the handling of tapes which are imported that reside in a media vault other than the "offline" media vault. Here's what you need to do to work around this long standing bug.
The workaround for this problem (which we discovered this morning) is as follows:
1.) Set the default media vault (Tools - Options) to "Offline"
2.) Set the Vault Rules for all of your media sets to "None"
3.) Move all the media from your vaults to the "Offline" vault.
