Can't get Backup Exec to work

Tom_Peeters

Hi

After trying out many, possible, solutions I found on the net I finally came here in the hope that you can help me.

I have here a MS Server 2003 SP1, have had some problems with it (MS installer for example) but was able fix this. BE 9.1 also gave some problems (not wanting to backup anymore) so I decided to uninstall & reinstall it, this didn't work, unable to reinstall...
I then installed 9.0 and this did work, until a third party company who also works on this server changed the Java Runtime Envirement back to current version 1.4 (apparently when installing BE he automaticly changes this to 1.2?). After this I got services that wouldn't start, the BEDB_Dat.mdf file that seems locked (all of the repairing operations failed because of this), etc. With other words, BE was completely useless at the moment.
Then I decided to try and start fresh so I completely removed everything that has something to do with BE from the server (following the steps from this page: http://itmanager.blogs.com/notes/server_applications/) and after this I installed BE 9.1 again. This didn't gave any problems but right after the installation (and before the reboot) I went to check the JRE, it has been changed back to 1.2.... now this is a problem, because an other program that runs on this server needs version 1.4. So I changed this again in 1.4, then I rebooted the system.

And now I am as far as I was before this reinstallation of BE 9.1: BE doens't want to start (he asks me to connect to the media server which he can't), some of the services can't start (error 1065: The database specified does not exist & error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start) and all the other now probs...
I've tried BEUtility but whatever I try, it always ends "failed". I've tried installing SP's but this gives an error saying "Device activation error. The physical file name 'C:\...\....\...\BEDB_Dat.mdf' may be incorrect. And then he does a roll back action.

Any help/tips/input greatly appreciated!

Regards
Tom

Anyone...?

Does the JRE has anything to with the fact that BE doesn't function? If so, how can I make it work with JRE 1.4?

Hi Tom,

After the uninstall did reinstall run without any errors ?Also check Event logs,if any and update us on the same.

Search for the MSDE_Bkupexec file under WINDOWS folder and search for 'return valu 3' and paste the exact error above this value.

Also what is the other software running on the server which needs another jre version and due to which there is a conflict !

Update us on the same and revert for any further Query.

Thank you
Gauri

There's no "return value 3" in the MSDE_Bkupexec.log file.

The other program mentioned is "Coda", a financial program.

Need more, please let me know. Glad I can get some help with this.

Wanted to try the KB article you suggested but noticed that the services suddenly where started (after yet another reboot), BE runs now.

Very strange, didn't actually found a solution, suddenly the services where started again (and the JRE = 1.4)... I hope this doesn't happen again.

Thank you for your help.

Regards
Tom
