Cataloging Backup Jobs/Policies/Selection lists to txt or CSV file

Aaron_W

Hi All,

As the title suggests i'm looking to catalog all backup jobs, policies and selection lists in backup exec. Im interested to learn if backup exec 2010 has the capability to out put this information in either a txt file or a csv, or something easily maniplulated in excel.

So far my research has turned up nothing, i'm hoping to avoid having to manually record the information. Thanks in advanced.

Regards,

Aaron

This feature has often been asked for, but it is still not available.  You cannot export the job or selection settings.

Hello Aaron,

You may use BEMCMD to try and extract some information such as selection lists and schedules.

Please refer to the following documents that demonstrate the use of BEMCMD.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH15454

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH18618

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126925

Now you may not be able to extract all information like policies or entire templates.

Catalogs are found at C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs and the databases withe job logs are at C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\DATA.

You may stop all BE services and take a copy of these, however may not be able to extract them to flat file.

Please note that BEMCMD is the best resort, some of the above documents have older versions of BE listed, but the commands are the same for BEMCMD, the actual install location for BE will have to be modified, for eg, X:\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT in older versions is now changed to X:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec.

If this answers your query, please mark as resolved, if you need further help please post or refer to the knowledgebase.

Thank You!

You can export you selections to excel not your backup jobs and polkices .

Here are the steps to export Selection list to an Excel file:

1) We need MS Excel installed, to export the content to excel file.
2) Open MS Excel 2007 application.
3) Click on Data Menu.
4) Click on “from other sourcesàselect “From SQL Server”.
5) Data connection Wizard opens up.
6) Enter the server name <Backup Exec media server>\BKUPEXEC
7) Select log on credentials to “Use Windows Authentication” and click “Next”.
8) Select the BEDB database.
9) Check the option “connect to a specific table”.
10) Select the following view: "vwScriptPropertiesBackup".
11) Click finish on the “Save data connection file and finish” Window.
12) Click OK for “import data” window.
13) This opens the excel sheet with all the details.
14) “ScriptName” list the names of all the jobs including backup job.
15) We can sort ScriptName column. And use DeviceSelectionName, PathName and FileName" lists the selection details for folders and file level detail.

You cannot export the jobs and polices into a txt or CSV . If you want you can store all the configuration of you backup exec in .CFG file refer http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH37072 .

More on there are different report which you can run in backup exec , see if any of the report helps you to get the infromation you need .

The above procedure is not recommended, hence the use of BEMCMD. Exporting configuration to CFG is another way of keeping a copy of the settings for DR purposes, again, we have seen issues with BEUTILITY where CFG files are not easily loaded. As suggested earlier, a manual copy of the DATA and CATALOGS folder would suffice.
