Clarification of Append/Overwrite requested

Now, it is quite possible I missed this in the administrators guide (as evidenced by my posting in the “can’t find media in tape drive” thread) and this may be an idiot question but I would like clarification of the append/overwrite in the media set.

Overwrite:
Is this the specific piece of data (job) on the media, not the whole media correct?

Append:
What exactly does this reference? Append another job to the media or append modified data to existing back up data? this is what I am really unclear on.
