Cross Forest Exchange GRT Restore

Hi,

We are trying to use the GRT restore technology for individual exchange items, which in the past has worked very well.

This time however, the Backup Exec Media Server is in Domain A and the Exchange server is in Domain B.  They are actually also in different AD forests.

We have created a forest trust which has allowed us to push agents as well as backup and catalog the granular data from the Exchange Server, but when we go to do a granular recovery of an item we receive the following error:

"0xe000848c

The job failed with the following error: Unable to attach to a resource.  Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again.  If the server or resource no longer exists, remove it from the selection list. Edit the selection list properties, click the View Selection Details tab, and then remove the resource.

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33932"

From what I can gather we may need to create a linked mailbox which the Domain A Backup Exec service account has full access.

Has anyone successfully performed a cross forest GRT restore, and was the above required to make it happen?

Just looking for a bit of a sanity check :)

Thanks

James

Hi James,

If you can back up the Exchange server in Domain B you should be able to restore to it, unless you're using a different account in Domain B that isn't present in the users section of the media server.

Just check and make sure the BESA user account is an admin both in AD on Domain B, along with Local Admins on the Exchange server and try again.

Thanks!

EDIT: You might want to give the TN below a read to see if you're complying with some/all of the requirements:

Thanks for that Craig,

The BESA is a local admin on the Exchange 2010 server, and is actually backing the granular data up no problem (however - in the jobs credentials I've specified a Domain Admin user account with a mailbox in the Exchange forest).

I know in the past with our single domain configs the BESA needed access to a mailbox in the Exchange organisation or grt restores failed.

This artical made me wonder about the linked mailbox:

"If you redirect a mailbox restore to an Active Directory in a different forest than the Exchange server, you must associate an external account with the mailbox. Refer to your Microsoft documentation for details.

Cheers

James
