Is it possible to get a Quantum DLT-s4 (800-1600) drive to work with backup exec 9.1? I know the drive is not on the harware compatibility list but perhaps it's possible....

Being on the HCL just means that it has been tested by the Veritas/Symantec engineers
As long a the device works with and has a driver for your OS, it should  work with BackupExec, it's just that there are no guarantees
