Deduplication and job time question

Upinit
Level 3

So I'm testing out BE 2014 and created a job that backs up approximately 450 GB to a deduplication storage device which is on our SAN. The data rarely changes and a full backup takes about 18+ hours to complete. The same job takes over 15+ hours to complete on my current BE 2010 job which backs up to tape without deduping. I see deduplication is working as the size on the deuplication storage device isn't increasing much after multiple full backup jobs run.

My question is I thought with deduplication I would see an improvement in job speed in addition to space savings since the deduplication process would weed out the files that hadn't changed and not have to back them up. Is my thinking about deduplication incorrect here?

No.  Dedup does not improve the job run time and may, in fact, take longer.  There is extra processing involved to determine which chunks of data to store.   See my article below
