Elapsed time on backup

Can someone out there tell me why sometimes my backup takes just under 3hours to backup 38GB while other days it takes 12+Hours. There does not seem to be a rhyme or reason to this. Our Exchange Public Folders are 11GB and when it runs long the majority of the time taken is on the Public Folders (Not the Information Store). I can't determine the issue, but needless to say would perfer a 3hour backup. We are running Win 2003 Server, BUE 10 on a brand new Dell Server with a new DLT VS160, 2GB Ram, Dual XEON Processors & Exchange 2003 for 35 users. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello,

The slow backup operation happens because antivirus is scanning the Information Store when the backup job is running, and that the antivirus software is using the same Messaging API as Backup Exec is using when backing up mailboxes. To improve on slow backup performance when having the antivirus present and running, go to the Services Applet and stop all the antivirus services before running the backup job.

Also check that Exchange DatabaseMaintenance Interval is not conflicting with Exchange Backup Schedule. Refer to the following technote to change the Database maintenance interval:
