Encryption in Future Backup Exec versions?

Need to know if encryption will be available in an upcoming version of Backup Exec - v10 or v11? Simply need to start planning for it or move to another product. We have client sensitive data we need to protect when sending data to tape.

Hello,

In current versions of Backup Exec, we can only password protect media .Backup Exec does not encrypt the data on the tape.If you set a password then it is required when you catalog the tape and hence the information contained in the tape cannot be read without the correct password(Its very secured).Password protected media can be erased without requiring the password.

There is no functionality to backup data with encryption on to the tape.

Please refer to the following technote to know the procedure to password protect media:

I am well aware of the ability to password protect a tape through Backup Exec. My question is still unanswered...IS Encryption a feature that will be added to an upcoming release of Backup Exec? Yes or NO? Password protecting a tape IS NOT Encryption. If encryption is being planned, I need to know what release it's being scheduled for.

A fact to know about password protecting the tape. We did a backup of our Exchange servers to a password protected tape with BE ver10.0. Then we took this tape and used it with another software called Recovery Manager for Exchange (We are evaluating this software from Quest Software. http://wm.quest.com/). This software restores the e-mail of an inbox without restoring the whole Exchange IS from a backup tape. Recovery Manager for Exchange was able to access and restore the data from the password protected tape without asking for the password of the tape.

There goes the protection that a password "protected" tape gives you.

If your software does not process the Veritas headers, but simply scans the tape looking for an Exchange Backup File, this would be expected, since the password is stored in the header and processed by Veritas before any tape operations are permitted through BackupExec

Thanks for the heads up!
