It's running Exchange 2007 on a Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. I have it set up to only backup from active copy (as I understand there's a problem with passive copy). It's using Advanced Open File Copy set to use the System snapshot provider.

When I look at the event viewer logs there's quite a few errors on both VSS and MSExchangeIS. Since there's quite a few errors I don't know which one is the root cause of the problem. Here's a list of the errors in chronological order.

What's the problem? What can I do to fix it?

Thanks,

Hi,

You can either restart the server which will reset the VSS writers, but then you need downtime.

Alternatively, check the TN below and reregister the VSS *.dlls.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH70486

Unfortunately, since your VSS writers are already in error, running a backup job without AOFO is effectively a waste of time as you found out!

Thanks!

Can you try to run this job without using the AOFO option?

Thanks

Thanks for the response.

Without AOFO turned on it still fails with the same error and same errors in event viewer.

Thanks,
David.

Hi,

Seems like both options involve restarting the server. I looked at the writers and they're all stable however one did have a "retriable error". I'll look into arranging a time for a restart and see if that resolves the problem.

Thanks,
David.

Just adding to the reboot, pls ensure the exchange maintenance does not conflict with the backup.

Well it seemed like it randomly started working. One scheduled backup worked before the restart and the rest have worked since. Guess that's done the trick, thanks.

I have the same problem with Backup Exec 11D and I will try a reboot to see if that fixes it.

Thanks
