Error during restoring from .bkf restored from tape

Hello!

We got a small problem here!

We have .bkf named B2D000508 restored from tape. It was placed on a newly created backup-to-disk folder. That folder was inventoried and .bkf was catalyzed. When we tried to restore data from it we got this:

At the moment it was restored there was another media with the same name but on another backup-to-disk folder. We placed it in retired media set and deleted it from BE but it didn't help. Now we don't have media named B2D000508

So how can we restore our data?

This might help you understand

a) why your backup stategy is NOT recommended

b) some of the items you might have to reset to get your restore to work.

If your restore situtation is a one-off then simplest method woulld be to install Backup Exec on a different server in trial mode, create an empty B2D, then copy the BKF file (or files) on question into the b2d before running an inventory and catalog of the b2d

For the long term use duplicate jobs instead of flat file backups/copies  of the bkf files to get your data onto tape (as mentioned by Craig V)

EDIT: you might have a second issue: i.e. if the BKF you are interested in is the max size for a bkf file on your server, then it is possible that it is expecting a second bkf file due to spanning and creating a chain of 2 or more bkf, as such if you still have the job logs for the backups then it is worth checking to see which media were used and making sure the time matched versions of all the media are recovered.

Hi,

Did you backup the B2D folder directly, or duplicate to tape? If you backed it up then your catalogs are probably and restoring that data might not actually complete at all.

The best practice is to run a duplicate to tape instead as this preserves the catalogs within BE, meaning you can just restore from tape.

Thanks!

...refer to the TN below as well around backing up the B2D directly:

Thanks!
